CoffeeZilla vs. Mecha-CoffeeZilla

Over the holidays my uncle was lucky enough to pick up my name in the annual family Christmas box, and I was lucky to have an uncle well versed in the ways of Amazon and Ebay, as the items on my Christmas list aren’t always found at retailers out in the sticks of rural Manitoba where my family is from.  So thanks uncle for the new V60.

Yeah I have a purple kitchen, wanna fight about it?

Yeah I have a purple kitchen, wanna fight about it?

I’ve owned pour-over devices before, but never saw the need to add a V60 to the coffee quiver, but, why not collect em all right?  It was a bit of an interesting Christmas, as coffee makers seemed to be a popular gift, and much to my chagrin, most of those makers end up taking all the fun out of making coffee (and the taste too) by using space-age capsules.  Those makers, who shall not be named, also take all the work out of a making a cup, while the V60 puts it all back in.  If you’ve never seen a V60 cup in action, check out this video from Intelligentsia, and their sweet V60 bar.

Much like the Intelligentsia V60 bar, several pour over holders already exist, like the Clive Stand and Hario V60 Station, but you still need to put the same effort and care into brewing a cup as you would without the stand.  However, Dear Coffee, I Love You spotted something in the last few days on Instagram that seems to combine the two polarizing worlds of one-button-space-capsule coffee makers and pour-overs.

Auto Hario V60

What is this Japanese monstrosity? Well, if you can read Japanese, you can check out this page for it here.  Keep in mind, it’s a lot of Japanese, and Japanese is hard.  DCILY reports that it’s apparently only available in Japan right now, and would retail for $165.  You can read a lot more about it on his blog here.  If you want an idea of how it works, Hario has posted this video on their site:

Now, while I don’t think this is a terrible idea, I’m sure it does brew a good cup coffee (similar to a Technivorm), it still takes all the fun out of it.  That being said, my wife did have this reaction when I showed her the Auto V60:
