Bigger, Faster, Darker

Once again Manitoba’s most hyped bike race, Dark Cross, delivered all that and a bag of chips, assuming you stood in line at the concession stand.  Over 200 racers took to the start line this year and the grandstands were full of really excited cross fans, swinging cowbells and heckling their favorite racers.  While I had to miss most of the action because of work I did manage to catch the whole CAT 1/2 race in all its glory.  It was arguably the closest finish I have seen in a 1/2 race in the last few years in Manitoba.  A group of 5 lead riders traded positions nearly every lap, with the cagey veteran, Don Sawatzky, taking the lead at the last minute and just edging out Dan Enns in the sprint finish with the remaining 3 riders nipping at their heels.

I talked to a few riders after the race and many said it was a tough slug through the course.  There were a lot of racers who were fooled by the early laps around the Speedway banks and didn’t leave enough gas in the tank to keep up the pace through the ‘chicanes of pain’ or the Wallace & Wallace run-up.  But those same riders also said it was one of the most fun courses they have ever ridden.

And speaking of the fun, I did manage to catch the end of The Vibrating Beds set right before the last race, and I’ll go on record as saying it was the tightest performance I’ve ever seen at the Speedway.  Seriously, check out their music.

Also, keep tuned to DarkCross.ca for the results of the Shot in the Dark photo contest.  The photo at the top of page from lighting mastermind, Stefan Isfeld, is an early favorite of mine.  Hopefully you can check out the whole set here.

Lots of praise needs to go out to the race organizers for this event.  Without the Fort Garry Bike Club and all the sponsors, it really would have just been a very dark ride over some bumps in the middle of nowhere, with no beer.
