CNBC ’12 Championships

Yesterday’s first round action of the Canadian National Barista Champsionships in Toronto gave us a peek what at the best of the best are up to in the coffee world and left the prairie region very well represented in today’s final round.  Three Calgarians, Jeremy Ho and Ben Put from Phil & Sebastian, and Cole Torode from Caffe Rosso,  all cracked the top 6.  Final round competition starts today at 10:00 am ET. If you want to catch it live while it happens, head over to the livestream.  And you can check out Espresso Adventures for more details on the other finalists.

If you’ve never even heard of the CNBC or even knew that there were barista championships held around the world before, I’ll give you a little sample of what typically goes on.  The following outline is from Barista Canada:

During both the National and Regional competitions, each competitor will be expected to prepare and serve 12 separate espresso beverages: 4 espresso, 4 cappuccinos, and 4 “signature” drinks of their own creation. Competitors have only 15 minutes to prepare all 12 drinks and are judged on various elements including station cleanliness, taste, beverage presentation, technical skills and total impression by a distinguished panel of local judges from the foodservice industry.

The eventual winner of the Canadian National Championship will represent Canada at the 2013 World Barista Championship.
All the competitors will receive great prizes for participating as well as valuable experience.
Good luck to all the competitors today, and if you’re ever in the city that the soon to be crowned champion is from, stop by their cafe and you too can experience some of the best baristas in action.  Heck, if you just want coffee, stop by a quality cafe near you.
