Able’s New Kone Filter

Let’s make something perfectly clear right off the start: I prefer a paper filter.  Call me crazy, but I do.  Granted I rarely give metal filters a chance so maybe there is some merit to them that I’m just too stubborn to experience.  That being said, Able‘s new Kone metal filter is quite intriguing.  Although this is technically the third iteration of the filter, it seems like they finally hit the mark they were trying to set with the product.  For use with the Kone or Chemex, or a few other similar brewing systems, the filter uses just under a bazillion micro-holes to separate the grounds from coffee goodness.  If you want a really great overview of the product head over to Dear Coffee, I Love You and read up in their post.  And keep going back there too.  Lots of great stuff.

While I have never personally used previous versions of the Kone filter, I hear it’s actually quite nice to work with.  Able also makes the Disk, which is a metal Aeropress filter, which I do own and have used.  Like I said earlier, I prefer a paper filter.  I feel that paper filters generally prove for a fuller taste than metal and are easier to clean up, however, I do appreciate the metal filter from a sustainability aspect.  And though I’m no longer working in a shop, I can see it being quite a treat for shops who frequently use Chemex or Kone systems, and not have to worry about filter slip.

Also, if you are not familiar with the Kone brewing system then I suggest this quick video from Able.

The Kone brewing system is currently on pre-order and expects to ship just before Christmas, which is important to remember if you happen to want to buy me a gift this year.  Also keep in mind that both the Kone and Disk filters come in an 18k gold plated version and should fit in to my stocking nicely.
